conversation between friends

Vijay : Hello, Karthik! I visited your house yesterday.

You weren’t there. Where did you go?

Karthik : I went to see the football match between our school

and Brindavan school. I left home very early.

Vijay : How was the match? Was it interesting yesterday?

Karthik : The match started exactly at 5 pm. Our school played

well and scored the first goal before half time

immediately after, Brindavan School scored the

equalizer. Our school scored the winning goal in the

last minute and won the match.

Vijay : Oh! When did you reach home?

Karthik : I reached home very late.

Vijay : By the way who won the match last year?

Karthik : Even last year, our school won the match

situation 2

Raj       : Hey Seema, did you watch the match yesterday?

sachin was in terrific form

Seema  : Oh yes, I did. But don’t you think we should stop

spending so much money on  cricket and cricketers?

Raj       : No way. I don’t think so. I don’t agree with you,

Seema, Cricket is, the only sport we excel at as a nation.

So there’s nothing wrong in encouraging the game.

What do you feel Arun?

Arun     : I tend to disagree with you Raj. However if you want my frank opinion,

I feel India can do without cricket until poverty und illiteracy is eradiated.

Right, Seema?

Seema  : Absolutely! OUR focus should be on economic development right now.

Raj       : I think-both of you are very foolish. Cricket creates

so much national pride that it binds the nation.

Sugam phone-in - dial a phone program in English

Compére : Welcome viewers to our ‘Sugam phone-in’ show! This week, we have with us Dr. Balan, Paediatrician,Dr. Ammaiappar, Geriatrician, Dr. Tholkappiar, Dermatologist,   Dr. Brian D’Souza, Neurologist and Dr. Bonnie Rajkumar, Orthopaedic surgeon. We
request our viewers to be brief in their queries and spell out their symptoms clearly. Remember our no. is 044-28279210. Here’s our first call.. (tr…ing…ng..)

Caller 1 : Question to Dr. Tholkappiar, please.

Dr.T : Yes, ….

Caller 1 : Doctor, I’m Harry, an 18 yr old college student. I have lost a lot of hair in recent months. I have an itchy scalp too. I have not changed my hair oil or shampoo, recently. I drive a two-wheeler and wear a helmet. Could that be the reason for my hair-fall?

Dr.T : Certainly not, Mr. Harry. It is a myth that wearing a helmet will cause loss of hair. Your problem could be dandruff. Check if there are white powdery flakes on your scalp. It is dandruff that is a major cause of hair-fall. It causes itchiness too. Use anti-dandruff
shampoo twice a week. Candid TV could prove effective. If you have an oily scalp, wash your hair regularly. Dust and dirt, combined with oil could cause dandruff. Also use your own comb, towel, etc.

Caller 1 : Thank you, doctor.

Compére : Our next caller …. (tr…ing…ng..)

Caller 2 : Question to Dr. Bonnie Rajkumar.

Dr. B R : Yes, please.

Caller 2 : I’m Nikita, a medical transcriptionist. For the past six months I’ve been having pain at the joint of my neck and spine. It arises when there is a jerk while travelling on my bike, or when I bend down to work. Sometimes I also have giddiness. I had an x-ray
taken and doctors said that I don’t have spondilitis. I apply hot water fomentation and gels when pain occurs. How do I get rid of it?

Dr. B R : Your complaint is common among computer professionals. You need to take a few precautions. Do not work for more than 45 minutes at a stretch. Always rest for 15 minutes every hour. Your keyboard should be close to your body, i.e. your elbow should be bent at an angle while working. Use a thin pillow at night. Neck exercises are useful. Try these exercises.(Demonstrates a couple of exercises.)

Compére : There’s our next caller ….. (tr…ing…ng..)

Caller 3 : Hello, is it ‘Sugam phone-in’ show?

Compére : Yes, it is.

Caller 3 : I’m Mrs. Guna. My question is to Dr. Balan. My daughter aged three, suffers from frequent cold, cough and wheezing with fever. On several occasions the child vomitsfood with mucus. We give her only boiled water. Doctors have diagnosed Upper
Respiratory Tract Infection and prescribed medicines, which only give temporary relief.

Dr. B : Many children have this problem, which is very recurrent when young. Don’t worry provided the child is active, gaining weight and sleeping peacefully. A child vomiting, especially after a bout of coughing, is not a cause for worry because it clears the airways blocked by mucus. Some preventive measures could be taken like, preventing her from playing in the mud, drinking iced drinks or going into an AC room after sweating profusely and avoiding smoking around the child. Continue the medicines and her immunity will gradually improve.

Compére : Viewers, please stay with us. We’ll be back with you after a short break for the commercials. Sugam phone-in

After a vacation - talking and sharing conversation

Prabha : Hi Sudha! How was your vacation?

Sudha : Great! We had lots of adventure and excitement!

Prabha : Adventure?! How come? You were going to Pune for a quiet holiday at your grandfather’s farm, weren’t you?

Sudha : Yes. You see, we had to go to Pune en route Bombay to pick up my aunts and via Hyderabad for a stop-over as Dad had some business deals to complete. Dad came up with a suggestion that we try different modes of transport. So we booked air and train tickets at the booking counters, boarded the train to Hyderabad, took a flight to Bombay and from
there we completed our journey to Pune by road.

Prabha : So that was the adventure!

Sudha : It was just one of the many. The adventure started from home when we couldn’t get the car started so we had to phone for a call taxi.We were delayed on our way due to
traffic snarls, and we managed to reach the railway station at the nick of time. Surprisingly, the train was starting out as scheduled so we scrambled into the coach with the porter
pushing us in along with our luggage. With the train departing on time we arrived at Hyderabad, without much ado but it was difficult to find the three star hotel in which
we had booked rooms well in advance. By the time we checked in we were exhausted!
As we had to catch a 7 a.m flight with the reporting time at 6 am we asked the reception to give us an early morning call at 4 a.m. He woke us only at 5.30 a.m. So we had to dash
to the airport, run up to the check-in desk, weigh our luggage - fortunately we had no excess baggage - collect our boarding passes and rush to the departure lounge. It was only then that we noticed the weather conditions! Yes, you guessed right! There was heavy fog! So you can imagine what followed: the flight was delayed by fog! We finally boarded
the plane at 8 am found our seats with the help of the airsteward and relaxed only after we had fastened our seat belts, and watched through the porthole the plane taxiing along the runway before it took off. The flight was not bumpy in spite of the weather and the pilot being a veteran, the plane cruised at a comfortable altitude. The touchdown was so smooth that I didn’t realise we had landed. When we alighted from the plane and walked to the terminal building we found our aunties waiting to receive us. They had rented cars for our drive down to Pune. So we piled in into two Ambassadors and from here the excitement began.

Prabha : I don’t see what is so exciting about riding in a car.We are doing it everyday, aren’t we?

Sudha : It’s not the car ride I’m talking about! It’s the road! The beautiful scenery on either side; the cool freshness of the air! There’s nothing like travelling by road if you want to know your country!

Prabha : So, how did the rest of your vacation go?

Sudha : I’ll tell you later, it’s time for the Morning Assembly.

SAVE WATER! SAVE THE WORLD! - General conversation

John : Now, I’d like to invite our District Collector to preside over the meeting. (The gathering cheered. After the invocation to Goddess Tamil and the address of welcome, Malick was invited to speak first.)

Malick : Respected President, dear friends, ladies and gentlemen. I would like to speak on the prevalence of water. Water is everywhere.

A lady from the crowd : But it is not in our street tap. (The whole crowd plunged into laughter.)

Malick : Water is the life-line of Mother Earth. It is the most common thing on earth. It covers 70 percent of the earth’s surface. About 97 percent of water is in the oceans. But it is salty and cannot be used for drinking and farming. Only about 3 percent of water is fresh. But most of it -about 70% of the fresh water - is frozen in glaciers and ice-caps.  About half a percent of fresh water is in .... (he pauses) Will any one of you tell me where it is?

A boy in the front row : It is confined to the Krishna Raja Sagar Dam. (Again the crowd enjoyed the boy’s wit.)

A girl in school uniform : It is under the ground, as ground water.

Malick : That’s correct. All living things - plants, flowers, trees, animals and humans - have water in themselves. Our human body has about two - thirds of water. There is three - fourths of water in a chicken and four - fifths in a pineapple. The human body requires about 3 litres of water a day. We can live without food for a month. But we cannot live
without water for more than 5 to 6 days.

An old lady : In that case, we people at the Varuna street are almost half dead. We are without water for the past three days! (Meanwhile Arumugam has started addressing the gathering.)

Arumugam : ...........Why is water scarce nowadays? This is because our need for water is becoming greater and greater. The population increases every year. Water is used in large quantities in our homes, fields and factories. Trees are being cut mercilessly.
Rainfall has become scanty. Ground water has drained too much. All our open wells and bore wells have become dry. Mother Earth looks sad and dry. She loses her dear ones like the palmyra, banyan, neem and tamarind and the ever smiling daisy, lotus and lily. We have to stop cutting down trees, avoid wastage of water and save rain water. Let us save
water, especially rain water in a bank, at our door steps - under the earth as ground water. Ground water is our Water Bank. (The audience were clapping their hands, when the district collector came up to the microphone.)

The District Collector : Ladies and gentlemen! Rain water is the only water resource for us. We should have water bank at our doorsteps. Rainwater harvesting is the only means that will serve the purpose, at this hour of great need. Thanks to our Government’s efforts, rainwater harvesting has become the ‘people’s movement’.
Every house is to have a structure for storing rainwater before the 31st of August 2003. Rainwater harvesting is nothing but storing rainwater in a sump or well or flowing it into the earth and saving it as ground water. Will you all save every drop of rain water?

The people : We will................ Now, Nature was lustily cheering her sons and daughters with rain, when the National Anthem was being sung.

The Clever Cop - policeman and prisoner conversation

It was a windy day. The clouds had gathered. It was about to rain. A policeman was escorting a prisoner to jail when his hat was blown off by the wind.

Prisoner : Will you allow me to run after it and get it for you, sir?

Policeman: No. Don’t think I can be cheated. You stay here. I will go and get it myself. (The policeman runs after the hat. Taking advantage, the prisoner runs in the opposite direction.)

Prisoner: (to a man coming on a bike ) Will you please take the policeman running over there to his home? He’s in a hurry.

The man : Sure, I will ................................ on the (To the policeman still running after the flying bike hat) Will you come with me? I will help you reach home .You seem to be in a hurry. I’ll give you a lift.

Policeman : (Turning back) Reach home? !

Offer of scholarship to study in Malaysia.

Principal : Don’t you think the scholarship is a great boon you’ve got. Why do you decline this offer?

Rahim : I do realise the value of the scholarship, sir. But if I could explain, my mother doesn’t want me to go overseas.

Principal : Why?

Rahim : You know, Sir. I am a fatherless boy and I’m the only son at home. My mother living alone for three years in my absence! She cannot even think of it.

Principal : Nobody to take care of her?

Rahim : My uncle, my mother’s brother, is already in Dubai.

Principal : Oh, I see. Then you are justified.

Catch them young - conversation about dog training

Andrew : Good morning, uncle. This is my pup, Minky. She’s only three weeks old. I got her last week. Please tell me how to house-train her.

Nayakan : Hello, Minky! Cute little pup. Yes, Andrew. Let me give you a few tips. With young puppies, when the urge comes, they go -it usually doesn’t matter where
they are or what they are doing. If we didn’t put diapers on human babies, they too would soil our carpets and floors. Confine your puppy to a dogproofed area and line the entire floor with papers. The idea is that no matter where the puppy eliminates, it is on something that resembles her toilet area. Your goal is to never allow your puppy to eliminate on carpet, tile, hardwood, or anything that resembles the flooring in your home. Once a habit is established, it is difficult to break, therefore, do not let your pup
form bad habits in the first place. Praise and reward your puppy each and every time possible for eliminating in her toilet area. Never hit, kick or slap your dog. Feed your puppy at regular times. What goes in on schedule will come out on schedule. Use a crate to help your puppy develop self-control. Provide constant access to the toilet area. If you are
at home, take her there every 45 minutes or less. Be patient. It can take until the dog is 6 months old for her to be housetrained.

Andrew : Uncle, all of us adore her and take turns feeding and bathing her. Is it OK?

Nayakan : No. It is best that each one has a defined role. Decide who is responsible for feeding and cleaning up after her. Don’t deviate from the schedule. Routine is especially important for your puppy.

Andrew : And uncle, she is chewing our footwear, rugs, carpet, anything that is lying around. What should I do about this?

Nayakan : This is only a phase and she’ll outgrow it. This is only because of ‘teething’. Provide a variety of toys for your puppy. Teach your puppy to play with these toys. Praise puppy every time you see her chewing or playing with her toys on her own. Any area that
the pup has access to must be kept clear and clean. Put out of puppy’s reach anything you don’t want her to chew or destroy, such as trash, shoes, hazards, etc. Your puppy does not know what is valuable or dangerous and what is not. If you find your puppy with your best shoe in mouth, distract her away from it and replace the shoe with one of her toys. Praise
her for chewing her toy. Do not reprimand her for chewing your shoe. Reprimand yourself for leaving it out where she could find it.

Andrew : Should I start training her right away, or …..?

Nayakan : Since puppies are so impressionable, it is important to begin explaining the rules right away. Don’t give her special licence to get away with anything just because she is a puppy. If you allow her to have her way about certain things now, she will only be
confused later when you decide to change the rules. Remember, puppies learn very quickly with proper instruction.

Andrew : Is there anything else that I need to know?

Nayakan : Yes, there’s something very important - effective training requires good timing. This is the most difficult thing for most dog owners to learn. A critical difference between the way people learn and the way dogs learn involves the use of language. Language connects the present action with the past event. Dogs, for the most part, lack language skills. Good timing becomes critical to connect the action (your praise or correction) to the event. Learning how to communicate without words is the most important basic skill you need to learn. Learn to read your dog’s body language and how and when to react to it, then you will be the proud owner of a polite, socially adept
dog.

Bharat Radio - example program

Presenter : This is All Bharat Radio. Good morning to you listeners! And greetings on this 56th independence day. We now present to you a panel discussion on “Freedom”. Our panelists are the Honourable Minister Thamizhselvan, our respected Vice Chancellor  Thiru. Ram Kumar and the famous newspaper editor Ms.Sangeetha. I invite the Honourable Minister to express his views first.

Minister : Friends, a very Good morning to all of you. Freedom for me is freedom from foreign rule. We achieved it 56 years ago. I am proud to be a free Indian. Jai Hind!
Vice Chancellor : Dear listeners, in my opinion, freedom means freedom to learn what you like. I am sad to say that India has not achieved this freedom. Let us all work towards it.

Editor : My dear fellow Indians I’m sure you will agree with me when I say that freedom of the press is the real freedom. I am happy to say that we Indians have a free press.
Minister : I feel that our top priority should be economic freedom. Unless rural poverty is wiped out and the majority of people are assured of minimum standards of living, freedom will not mean anything.

Vice Chancellor : I agree with the Honourable Minister in toto. But I would like to add that complete freedom is something not practicable. One man’s freedom is restrained by the need to grant freedom to others. A certain amount of control by the government is unavoidable.

Editor : I am afraid, I can’t agree with my esteemed friend. Freedom is our birthright. Any effort by established governments to encroach upon our freedom should be
resisted by the people. Freedom is essential if democracy is understood as government by discussion in which everyone participates.

Minister : I am with you in defending freedom. We are happy that the architects of our constitution have taken great care to guarantee the fundamental rights to every citizen of India.

Presenter : Thank you very much for being with us and au revoir!

local radio programme conversation

This is Radio Ginger. Good Morning, listeners! Welcome to an exciting  morning of news – interviews, jokes, music and much, much more! Your presenters today are Rachna and Rahul!

Rachna : Hello, listeners – Good morning, I’m Rachna and I’m here with lots of interesting news for you. The highlight of today’s news is the sighting of an Extra Terrestrial. Here is a report. (music) A young boy, while collecting vegetables in his field
saw a pair of enormous eyes staring at him. On going closer the boy saw eyes like jelly fish with faint tentacles around them. The sunken eyes stared at the boy and then put out a
long finger. The boy shrieked and scrambled backward while the ‘creature’ jumped in the other direction, emitting an ultrasonic squeak. When the boy, finally pulled himself together and looked again, the creature had vanished! Now over to Rahul. But watch out for ET!

Rahul : Good Morning, Listeners. This is your friend Rahul and I’m here with the riddles for the day! So, sharpen your wits and get ready to answer them. Get your paper and pencil ready and work out each letter. It’s a word that means something everybody needs.
“My first letter is in RUSH and also in STOOL My second in KNACK and also in SALE
My third in LEAF and also in ROOF My fourth’s in FREE and also in SEA My fifth’s in TIGHT and also in TREAT My last’s in SMELLY and also in YOUNG” Ha, Ha, Ha! Did you get that right? Good for you. Now for some music. A request from our listener in  Pattabiram who wants to dedicate this song to her friend in Chalakudi. Here is
your song and after that over to Rachna. (Sound of music ………… fading away)

Rachna : It’s time for ‘Meet the Celebrity’, our regular feature. We have today in our midst a national awardee – Ms. Sita, who recently got the national award for Best Teacher. Let’s discover the real person ‘behind the chalk and duster and blackboard’.
Good Morning Ms. Sita! Congratulations on getting the national award, ma’am.

Ms.Sita : Thank You.

Rachna : I’d like to ask you some personal questions Ms. Sita, if it is all right.

Ms.Sita : Provided it isn’t too personal, I don’t mind.

Rachna : Tell me, Ms. Sita, as a young girl at school, did you ever get into trouble?

Ms.Sita : (laughing) Have you ever thought about how we teachers catch students at their tricks? I was also up to similar pranks at school. My teachers weren’t always happy with me.

Rachna : How do you spend your evenings, Ma’am?

Ms.Sita : I usually spend it with my family. We read, talk or go out together.
